Blockade of Boston premieres.
January 8, 1776
Written by Gen. John Burgoyne, it is performed by British officers and their wives at Faneuil Hall. The play is interrupted when a sergeant rushes onto the stage and cries, “The rebels – the rebels – they’re attacking the Neck!” Thinking the announcement is part of the play, the audience laughs. But then Gen. William Howe stands and shouts, “Officers to your alarm posts!” It turns out that, in fact, Colonial troops have raided Charlestown Neck. The soldier/actors abandon the stage and report to duty, ending the performance.
